Crafting the "Jade & Kali's" Shop Sign

I love the intersection of historical craft and modern technology. While there is profound value in carving wood and setting tiny type by hand, there is also magic in using contemporary tools to solve miniature problems.

For a recent project—a miniature furniture shoppe—I needed a prominent, beautifully designed hanging sign. I wanted it to feel established, perhaps a bit Victorian or Arts & Crafts in its typography, and I wanted it named after my nieces: "Jade & Kali's".

Here is how I brought it to life bridging the digital and physical worlds.

Step 1: The AI Foundation

I started by using AI image generation to brainstorm the structural shape of the sign. I wasn't looking for finished art; I was looking for silhouettes. I prompted for "Victorian carved wood hanging shop sign, ornate bracket, flat illustration."

AI struggles deeply with typography, so the text it generated was beautiful, illegible nonsense. But the frame—the scalloped edges and the sweeping iron bracket—was exactly the inspiration I needed.

Step 2: Refining in Photoshop

I brought the generated concept into Photoshop. This is where the actual design work happens. I masked out the nonsense text and began laying out the typography.

I chose typefaces that fit our Atelier aesthetic—something with a bit of weight, high contrast, and classical proportions. I added subtle drop shadows and gold leaf textures to the lettering to give it a carved, gilded appearance.

Step 3: Fabrication

Once the digital file was perfect, it was time to bring it into the physical world. I printed the sign at high resolution on archival matte paper. To give it the structural integrity of wood, I mounted the print onto a thin sheet of basswood, sealing the edges carefully so the paper wouldn't fray.

A bit of matte varnish over the top knocked back any unnatural shine from the ink, and suddenly, a digital file was a physical artifact, ready to welcome tiny customers to Jade & Kali's shop.
